The Barton Community College women’s soccer team couldn’t overcome three first-half goals Saturday afternoon as second-ranked Cowley College handed the Cougars a 4-0 defeat in their Jayhawk Conference finale at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The loss marks Barton’s third consecutive setback, dropping the Cougars to 3-6-8 overall and closing Jayhawk Conference play in sixth place at 1-6-7. Cowley improves to 14-1-0 overall, securing the conference championship with a 13-1-0 league record.
Barton faces a quick turnaround Sunday, traveling to Hasting College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against the Broncos’ reserve squad before opening Region 6/Plains District postseason play next Saturday on the road against third-seeded Hutchinson Community College.
Playing with a steady 20-mph south wind at its back, the visitors wasted little time finding the scoreboard, striking just 4:32 into the contest. Camille Carniglia initiated the scoring sequence with a pass ahead to Mariangela Lopez, whose through ball found Sarah Eckermann at the top of the box for a strike into the lower right corner, giving the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
Cowley doubled its advantage in the 26th minute when Sarah Britzke collected a Barton headed clearance and played a ball into the box for Sophie Knaab, who settled the feed before finishing from eight yards out inside the far post. Just under three minutes later, the Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 as Eckermann capitalized on a Barton misplay along the backline, creating a one-on-one opportunity before slipping her attempt inside the far post.
Barton goalkeeper Lucie Gillig turned away six shots during the second half, keeping the deficit at three until the 83rd minute when Sara Cortes collected a loose ball near midfield and slipped a through ball ahead to Eckermann, who finished a breakaway opportunity inside the left post for the final 4-0 margin.
By the Numbers
Cowley finished with a 19-3 advantage in shots, including a 13-1 margin in attempts on goal. The Tigers held an 11-2 shot advantage during the opening 45 minutes before outshooting Barton 8-1 in the second half.
Ana Luiza Gori accounted for two of the Cougars’ three shots, placing one on frame, while Ayaka Nagano recorded Barton’s remaining attempt. Between the posts, Gillig went the distance, finishing with nine saves.
