Ottawa Hit by Monday Night Tornado, Other Storms Impact Region

Severe storms impacted parts of eastern Kansas Monday evening, with a tornado hitting Ottawa just after 7:30 PM. This was from a severe storm that developed to the west of Emporia, going through parts of Lyon and Osage counties, eventually producing a tornado that was first confirmed on the ground at 7:13 PM south of Pomona with two inch hail reported in the area.

The National Weather Service in Topeka reported last night there was structural damage to a number of businesses along South Main between 15th and 23rd Streets along with widespread power outages, along with baseball sized hail.

Tornado damage was also reported in Spring Hill and the Hillsdale area in Miami County, Anderson County EMS sent a unit to Miami County to assist with medical response.

Locally a severe storm developed just before 7 PM near Humboldt, which would produce pea sized hail in Iola and Gas according to Allen County Emergency management. Radar indicated larger hail in the storm’s core, with 1 ½ inch diameter hail indicated south of Lone Elm as the storm moved into Anderson County.

This storm would eventually produce a tornado first spotted near Blue Mound and later confirmed near Mound City before moving east into Missouri.

Evergy Reported over 11,500 customers without power last night from the storm including some 260 customers in Bourbon and Linn counties. Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative reported about 210 customers without power in parts of Allen, Anderson and Linn counties, with most of those in Linn County.
