CHANUTE — Neosho County Community College highlighted renovations to its Mih Family Fine Arts Center during a campus visit by Kansas Department of Commerce representatives as part of the department’s Community Impact Tour.

The college received $162,000 in state tax credits that were sold to local donors to help finance the project. NCCC President Brian Inbody said the credits allowed participating donors to receive 70% of their contributions back through state tax refunds.

The $5.5 million project will transform the college’s theater, which opened in 1968, into an expanded arts and community center. Plans include a renovated performance space, reception and event areas, a gallery, scene shop, green room, amphitheater and memorial garden. The college’s campaign page lists nearly $4.5 million raised toward the project.

Inbody said the center will offer free meeting space for nonprofit organizations and government entities while serving as a venue for music and theater performances.

The project is intended to expand opportunities for students and performers while providing a gathering place for Chanute and surrounding communities. It honors Dr. Alexander W.S. and Mariam Mih, whose family has longstanding ties to the college
