A Humboldt man was shot and killed late Sunday afternoon in the aftermath of a reported domestic dispute, and a suspect is in custody.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation identified the victim as 43-year-old John Kent. Just after 5 PM Sunday Allen County Communications received a call on a shooting in the 1000 block of Sycamore Street, which Allen County Sheriff’s Deputies also responded to. In a release Monday afternoon, the KBI said a female fled a residence during a domestic dispute involving Malachi Davis, 25 of Humboldt.

The female sought help at a neighbor’s home where John Kent, 43, contacted a male subject and became involved in a verbal altercation, during which Davis allegedly fired a single shot from his vehicle window striking Kent, who was taken by ambulance to Allen County Regional hospital in Iola where he later died. Davis fled the scene at that point.

About 8:40 PM Sunday the Kansas Highway Patrol spotted Davis and made a traffic stop near La Harpe where he was arrested and booked into the Allen County jail on suspicion of second degree murder.

The KBI is leading the investigation into the case, which also involved the Highway Patrol, the Sheriff’s office, and Kansas Wildlife and Parks officers.

The incident remains under investigation.
