Hutchinson Community College sophomore Ashara Frater broke away from the lead pack early on Thursday night to win the 11th-annual Terry Masterson Twilight Classic by an impressive 28.98 seconds at Fun Valley.

Frater became the third-straight Blue Dragon runner to win the season-opening Masterson Twilight and lead Hutchinson to a runner-up team finish.

The Blue Dragons were edged for the team title by Kansas Wesleyan University. The Coyotes had 37 points with four Top-10 finishes. The Dragons had 38 points with a pair of Top 10 finishes. Dodge City was third with 73 points.

Frater earned her second career Top 10 Masterson Twilight finish – Frater placed sixth as a freshman last season – and her first collegiate career victory with a time of 18:35.54 over the 3-mile course. That time ranked 21st in Masterson Twilight women’s race history.

Frater is the third-straight Blue Dragon to win the individual title, joining Faith Jepchirchir in 2024 and Mildred Rono in 2025.

Sophomore Kimberlin Lovell was the second Blue Dragon Top 5 finisher, placing a career-best third with a time of 19:08.75. Lovell cut 70 seconds off her freshman Masterson time.

Two other Blue Dragons finished in the Top 15 on Thursday night.

Sophomore Sabrina McDonald trimmed a full 1 minute, 35 seconds off her freshman Masterson time to finish 11th overall with a time 20:40.35.

Freshman Chelsea Willour finished 12th in her Blue Dragon debut with a time of 20:41.65.

Freshman Haylee Jantz was the fifth Blue Dragon to finish, posting a time of 21:23.09 to finish 19th.

The Blue Dragon women will next compete at the University of Arkansas Chili Pepper Festival in October.
