STERLING, Kan. — Sterling fell to Tabor College 2-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 22, despite a strong performance from their goalkeeper, who recorded seven saves. The Bluejays secured the victory with two first-half goals, maintaining the lead throughout the match. Sterling managed three shots on goal but were unable to convert any into scores.
The first half began with Sterling looking to establish control at home. Francesca Vilca attempted to put Sterling on the board in the 12th minute, but her shot went wide. Unfortunately, Tabor College capitalized on their opportunities, with Cyerra Boyer scoring the first goal in the 21st minute off a corner kick and Haven Deckinger adding another in the 26th minute.
Despite efforts from Sterling, including another shot from Vilca, the home team could not find the back of the net. Bella Duckworth made key saves to limit further damage, but Sterling entered halftime trailing 2-0.
The second period commenced with Sterling focused on gaining control, but the Bluejays were quick to challenge. Sterling’s defense, led by goalkeeper Duckworth, held firm with Duckworth making key saves against shots from Tabor’s Boyer and Alana Hernandez, maintaining the scoreline.
Sterling’s offense pushed forward, with Dakota Reid and Vilca both testing Tabor’s goalkeeper Neve Mulrooney, but Mulrooney was equal to the task. As the period progressed, Elysa Apen and Makenna Monnier also tried to find the net, but their attempts were stopped. Despite Sterling’s efforts to break through, the period concluded with no change to the score, ending with the Bluejays holding a 2-0 lead.
Duckworth made seven saves during the match, facing nine shots on goal. Vilca contributed to the team’s offensive efforts with three shots, one of which was on target. Reid also had a notable impact with one shot on goal. Monnier matched Reid’s performance by recording one shot on target as well.
Sterling holds a record of 2-13-1 overall and 0-10-1 in conference play. The Lady Warriors will take on the University of Saint Mary (5-5-5, 3-3-4) in Leavenworth, Kan. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
