No. 2 Dragons Cruise Past Cisco in Season Opener

Three different players scored multiple touchdowns and the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team rolled to a season-opening victory over Cisco College to move to 9-0 all-time in Thursday night games.

Bobby Shaw III caught two touchdown passes, JB Price rushed for a pair of scores and quarterback Randy Phillips threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as Hutchinson defeated Cisco College 59-7 on Thursday night at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons rolled to their fifth-straight season-opening victory and are now 58-35-2 in 95 season openers. Hutchinson will travel to play the Ellsworth Panthers at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 in Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Hutchinson scored touchdowns on its first four possessions to take a 28-0 lead with 10:56 to play in the second quarter. The Dragons led 42-7 at halftime.

The 59 points scored were the fourth-most points scored on opening night in Blue Dragon football history.

Shaw led the Blue Dragons with career highs of six receptions, 108 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns against the Wranglers. Sophomore Jeremiah Looney also had career-best receiving marks of six catches for 68 yards.

For just the second time in Blue Dragon history, three different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes in the same game.

Phillips completed 14 of 21 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Bravin Powell was 5 for 10 for 85 yards and a touchdown. Jace Jefferson was 4 of 4 for 48 yards and a touchdown. The only other time the Blue Dragons had three quarterbacks throw for touchdowns in the same game was November 7, 2021 when Dylan Laible threw for seven and Colin Shields and Daisean Cash had one each in a 77-0 win over Highland in a KJCCC Playoff game.

Price opened his Blue Dragon career with a 45-yard touchdown run on his first carry and rushed for a game-high 72 yards with scoring runs of 45 and 4 yards.

Overall the Blue Dragons had 312 passing yards and 240 rushing yards against Cisco. The Wranglers rushed for 106 yards and passed for 63. They had 72 yards on one play when Randall Jackson broke loose for a long touchdown run in the second quarter. The Dragons held Cisco to 44 total yards on the Wranglers’ other 46 total plays.

Sophomore defensive end Kameron Graham had three total tackles, two quarterback sacks and two quarterback hurries to lead the Blue Dragon defense. The Dragons had seven tackles for loss, including five quarterback sacks and one takeaway on a LaDarius Jemes‘ fumble recovery.

All-American punter Denzel More averaged 62.5 yards on two punts of a career-high 68 and 57 yards.

The Blue Dragon scored their first three touchdowns in 10 total plays in the first quarter. Price scored from 45 yards out on his first carry to complete a three-play 65-yard drive for a 7-0 lead with 12:50 to go. Phillips had a 6-yard touchdown run with 7:43 to go and Price added a 4-yard touchdown with 3:36 to go to give the Dragons a 21-0 lead.

The Dragons went up 28-0 after a Rashaud Hurt 1-yard run that capped an 11-play, 69-yard scoring drive. After the Wranglers cut the Dragon lead to 28-7, Hutchinson added Phillips touchdown passes of 8 yards to Shaw with 2:53 to go and 17 yards to Nakai Pool with 27 seconds remaining in the half to lead 42-7.

Hutchinson scored 10 points in the third quarter to lead 52-7. Freshman kicker Parker Frizzell kicked a 45-yard field goal with 9:40 to play in the quarter. Shaw then hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Powell with 2:12 to play in the third quarter.

Ravelle Leak then closed the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown reception from Jefferson with 8:22 to play in the fourth quarter for a 59-7 Blue Dragon lead.
