Ever since he burst onto the national scene as a freshman, 2026’s top-ranked player Tyran Stokes has done things his own way. Now, the 6-foot-7 senior from Seattle (Wash.) Rainier Beach has settled on his next step and committed to to Kansas live on ESPN’s Tip-Off on Tuesday night.
In mid-January while his recruitment was still very much in the air, Stokes discussed the long-standing bond that he’s been able to develop with Bill Self and the lead Jayhawk’s pitch clearly struck a chord with him.
“Since I’ve started high school basketball coach (Bill) Self has always told me that I’m the No. 1 player in the world and that he believes I can be the best player ever,” Stokes told 247Sports at the Hoophall Classic. “So if a guy trusts me that much as a freshman there’s no telling how much he could trust me when I’m on campus. Hearing that and having that trust in him and him having that trust in me he could be great.”
The clearcut best prospect in the class of 2026, Stokes is signed to a longterm NIL deal with Nike but it was something that the Adidas backed Jayhawks were able to overcome thanks to Self’s early efforts and the work of assistant coach Kurtis Townsend.
In fact, landing the nation’s No. 1 ranked player is nothing new to Self with Townsend serving as the lead assistant. During their time in Lawrence, Townsend has been the primary assistant on Josh Selby, Andrew Wiggins, Josh Jackson, Darryn Peterson and now Stokes who were all ranked No. 1 by at least one of the major scouting services.
A big-time scorer with size, athleticism, skill and underrated feel for the game, the addition of Stokes to a class that already features five-star point guard Taylen Kinney, four-star big man Davion Adkins and four-star wings Trent Perry and Luke Barnett will move the Jayhawks to No. 2 in the 2026 Composite team rankings.
The Jayhawks have also been intentional in building a transfer portal class around Stokes already signing the likes of Utah power forward Keanu Dawes and Toledo guard Leroy Blyden Jr and College of Charleston big man Christian Reeves.
247Sports most recently saw Stokes play during workouts for the 2026 McDonald’s All American Game where he impressed as usual.
“Through two days, Stokes hasn’t done anything to damage his status as the top player in the class. His blend of strength and skill is a lot to deal with and he’s been among the very best communicators in attendance. If anything, we wouldn’t mind seeing him take the bull by the horns and look to be a bit more assertive offensively. He had a solid all-around performance during the scrimmage and an argument could be made that he’s the most naturally gifted passer on his team.”
