Nickerson started their season brightly Friday, pitching a shutout in a 6-0 win over Lyons.
The win snapped Nickerson’s eight-game losing streak, dating back to last year’s opening win against Lyons.
Nickerson had a good chance late in the first half to take the lead, but a nice interception by Lyons’ Eli Martinez ended the threat.
Midway through the third quarter, Nickerson took advantage of a Lyons fumble, and the Panthers pieced together a five-play, 32-yard drive for a touchdown. Kristopher Monroe hit Skylar Wakefield on a 9-yard pass for the score.
Monroe finished with a good all-around game for Nickerson, throwing for 110 yards and rushing for 76.
