A new National Federation of State High School Associations serving screen rule is coming for the 2026-2027 high school volleyball season.
Players on the serving team may not raise their hands above their heads before the serve if it creates a screen that blocks the receiving team’s view of the server or the ball.
Why the change?
• To improve fairness during the serve.
• To prevent players from intentionally obstructing the receiver’s vision.
• To provide officials with clearer guidance on screening violations.
• According to the NFHS, simply raising your hands isn’t automatically a violation.
Officials will consider whether a screen is actually created based on the positioning of the players and whether the receivers’ view is obstructed.
Coaches and athletes are encouraged to review the new rule before the season starts.
Other new volleyball rules by the NFHS for the 2026-27 season:
• Two liberos may now be designated (only one can be on the court at a time).
• Several rules were updated to clarify two-libero procedures, including injury, disqualification and re-designation.
• Libero uniform bottoms no longer have to match the team’s uniform bottoms.
• Audio and video devices are prohibited during a match (spectators may record).
• State associations may approve textured volleyballs for competition.
• Additional editorial and administrative updates were made throughout the NFHS volleyball rules book to improve consistency and rule application.
