BUHLER, Kan. – The McPherson girls tennis team continued their outstanding season with a championship at the Buhler Tournament on Thursday. The day featured a top four finish in all four spots for the Bullpups.
McPherson had 68 points ahead of second place Wichita Classical with 46 and Buhler in third with 44. It was a much nicer day that the Bullpups have seen early this season. “After battling some really tough conditions to start the season, today was a welcome change,” said Bullpup coach Tyler Brown. “It was definitely hot, but overall the conditions were much better for tennis than what our girls have faced the last few weeks.”
The highlight of the day for McPherson was a championship match between both of their doubles teams. Quinn Liebl and Avery Unruh had a first round bye and played their way to the championship match against Dragon Rodriguez and Audra Sandbo. Liebl and Unruh came away with the win in the all-McPherson title match, finishing 3-0 on the day, while Rodriguez and Sandbo went 2-1.
“As a coach, there aren’t many better feelings than being able to sit back during a championship match knowing that everyone on the court is wearing McPherson on their chest,” said Brown. “At that point, you know your team is bringing home both first and second place and you simply get to watch your girls compete. That’s a pretty special feeling.”
In singles, Mayson Wiens and McKenna Paul had solid days and ended up playing each other in the third-place match. Wiens came out on top 8-5 to finish the day at 3-1 and Paul finished in fourth.
Next up for the Bullpup varsity tennis team is the Doug Gayer Classic in McPherson on Tuesday morning at 10:00.
