On Friday night in Buhler, the Crusader faithful were treated to a familiar refrain. Quarterback Asher Zachary handed the ball off to star running back Landon Martinez 21 times, and Martinez did what he has done all season—make the extraordinary look routine.

Martinez piled up an impressive 251 rushing yards and five touchdowns, averaging a staggering 11.9 yards per carry, as Buhler rolled to a 51-7 victory over Winfield. His performance was yet another chapter in a remarkable season as he continues to lead one of the area’s most prolific rushing attacks.

While Martinez and the Crusader offense grabbed the headlines, Friday night’s victory over Winfield was far from a one-sided effort. The Buhler defense delivered a dominant performance of its own, making life miserable for the visiting Vikings.

Leading the charge was Buhler’s three-headed monster at linebacker: Jackson Rumbaugh, Jordan Rumbaugh, and Asher McConnaughy. The trio combined for 30 tackles, including 14 solo stops, anchoring a defensive effort that kept Winfield on its heels throughout the night.

The Crusader defense wasn’t content with simply stopping the Vikings. It also created opportunities for the offense, forcing two fumbles and coming away with two interceptions. It was the kind of complete defensive performance that can make a good football team dangerous as the postseason approaches.

With the victory, Buhler improves to 5-2 and turns its attention to a pivotal matchup against Augusta, also 5-2, on Friday, October 23. With postseason positioning on the line, the stage is set for a showdown between two teams looking to build momentum heading into the playoffs.
