Drew Dechant is staying home in Hutchinson to play baseball.
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School senior signed a letter of intent to play for the Hutchinson Blue Dragons for the 2026 fall and 2027 spring seasons.
Dechant and the Celtics hosted a Heart of America League doubleheader Friday against Bennington at Rice Park in Hutchinson.
“Congratulations to Drew Dechant on signing with Hutchinson Community College,” as the announcement was made at Trinity High School and on social media.
“Drew will continue his baseball career at the collegiate level as a Blue Dragon. We wish you the very best as you finish your baseball season as a Celtic. Good Luck in your future endeavors, Drew!!”
Dechant, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-hander, has 109 strikeouts with less than an 0.99 earned run average. He has helped lead the Trinity Celtics to a 17-3 record in 2026.
Trinity has the third-best record in Class 2-1A Region 4.
Dechant, who was second-team All-State in baseball as a junior, passed the 300-strikeout milestone this season. During his junior year, Dechant posted an 18-strikeout game against Remington.
Dechant had a 15-strikeout game Friday in a 10-0 win over Bennington (Trinity won the second game of the doubleheader 18-3).
Dechant also was the starting quarterback, defensive back and punter for the Trinity football team. He was selected to play defensive back on the West Team in the 2026 Kansas Shrine Bowl.
In a 44-42 Class 1A quarterfinal loss to undefeated state champion Sterling, Dechant completed 12 of 16 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns and added a pair of two-point conversions.
The Celtics, who finished 8-3, equaled their best postseason run since 1979.
Dechant completed 62% of his passes for 1,781 yards with 20 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 649 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dechant also made more than 50 tackles on defense.
According to Prep Baseball Report, the Hutchinson Blue Dragons also received a commitment from Ellinwood High School senior Cohen Gunn, a left-handed pitcher/outfielder.
Gunn currently has 65 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched with a 0.91 earned run average.
Ellinwood, which has an 8-12 record, hosted Minneapolis on Friday and will host Sylvan-Lucas/Lincoln on Monday.
