Hutchinson Trinity, Sterling Boys Golf Teams Headed to 2A State Tournament

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic and Sterling placed first and third at the Kansas Class 2A sub-state tournament Monday at Pittsburg’s Crestwood Golf Course.

The Celtics and Black Bears qualified for the Kansas Class 2A state tournament May 26-27 at Winfield’s Quail Ridge Golf Course.

Hutchinson Trinity won the sub-state title with a 334 score, followed by St. Mary’s Pittsburg-Colgan 359 and Sterling 387. The top three teams at each regional/sub-state site automatically qualify for the state tournament.

Eureka placed fourth with a 413 score, followed by Erie 419, Uniontown 424, Kansas City Christian 439, Sedgwick 462, Oswego 480 and Whitewater-Remington 491. Humboldt did not have enough players to post a team score, but Connor Newman captured first-place medalist honors with 1-over-par 73.

The top five individual players not on a qualifying team also advance. All ties for the fifth qualifying spot are included.

Hutchinson Trinity’s Tyler Casebolt placed second with a 75 and Erie’s Ty Barnhart finished third with a 79.

The Trinity Celtics placed five other golfers in the top 16: Seamus Hogan tied for fifth with an 85, Miles Blaylock and Ian Shaw tied for seventh with 87s, Dean Nelson tied for 10th with an 88 and Matt Armour tied for 16th with a 97.

Sterling was paced by Wyatt Newberry, who tied for 10th with an 88, followed by Lane Weigel, 14th, 94; Ian Dillard, 29th, 100; Cameron Morris, tied for 24th, 105; Zac Wohler, 35th, 117; and Billy Higgins, 43rd, 123.
