Hutchinson Central Christian to Send Cael Kooiman, Tyler Reed to Class 1A State Golf

Hutchinson Central Christian High School will send golfers Cael Kooiman and Tyler Reed to the Kansas Class 1A state tournament May 26-27 at McPherson’s Turkey Creek Golf Course.

Kooiman placed fourth and Reed tied for seventh at the Kansas Class 1A sub-state Monday at the par-70 Stafford Country Club. The meet was hosted by St. John-Hudson.

Kooiman fired a 10-over par 80 and Reed shot an 83. Reed lost to Goessel’s Levi Schrag in a playoff.

The top three finishing teams at each regional/sub-state site automatically qualify for the state tournament.

The top five individual players who are not on a qualifying team also advance. All ties for the fifth qualifying spot are included.

South Gray won the sub-state with a 331 score, followed by Kiowa County 336 and Hodgeman County 352.

St. John-Hudson finished fourth with a 368 score and Central Christian placed fifth at 378. Flinthills was sixth at 434, followed by Stafford 435 and Sedan 450.

Central Christian’s Adam Eigsti tied for 31st place with a 105 score, followed by Bruce Wilson, 388th, 110; Karson Sullivan, 43rd, 117; and Bo Hobbes, 127.

South Gray’s Gavin Wahl captured first-place medalist honors with a 1-under-par 69. Wahl has now shot under par in 7 of his 9 rounds this season, ranking No. 1 in 1A and No. 6 overall in Kansas.

The South Gray Rebels placed five other golfers in the top 21. Daxton Hendrickson placed eighth with an 86, followed by Owen Reed, tied for ninth, 87; Kelby Yost, tied for 12th, 89; Kevin Banman, tied for 15th, 91; and Seth Thomas, tied for 21st, 96.

Kiowa County’s Sawyer Campbell and Thayer Zadina placed second and third with scores of 74 and 76. Kiowa County’s Boone McDonald tied for 13th with 89, followed by Jace Frazier, 22nd, 97; Lochland Gumpenberger, 26th, 100; and Kendal Cooper, tied for 37th, 109.

Hodgeman County was led by Kollin Washburn, who placed fifth with an 81. JordyLee placed 11th. 88; Carson Goebel, tied for 16th, 91; Ian Reece, tied for 17th, 92; Arthur Zimmer, 30th, 104; and Isley Rydquist, fied for 36th, 109.

St. John’s Easton Alpers tied for 10th with an 87, followed by Cody Newdigger, tied for 18th, 92; Dylan Vieux, 19th, 93; Weston Peterson, tied for 20th, 96; Averi Fisher, 34th. 108; and Grady Long, 44th. 118.

Pretty Prairie, Goessel, Kinsley and Burden-Central did not field enough players to post team scores.

Pretty Prairie’s top finishing golfer was Dawson Dick, who tied for 24th place with a 98. Teammate Weston Lanning tied for 32nd with a 105 and Eli Anderson tied for 37th with a 109.

Goessel’s Anthony Boden tied for 39th with a 112.
