Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team and Indian Hills Warriors started off the 2026 Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic with an intense four-set battle Thursday night at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons did something not done since 2017 – win a match where all sets were deuce sets.
Hutchinson dropped the first set to Indian Hills in its 2026 home opener, but rallied to upset the No. 15-ranked Warriors in four sets, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 27-25, securing the victory on Luisa Richa‘s ace serve on match point.
The Blue Dragons improved to 6-2 overall with a fourth-straight victory. The Blue Dragons play MSU-West Plains at 11 a.m. and No. 8 Trinity Valley at 5 p.m. on Friday on Day 2 of the Blue Dragon Classic.

Hutchinson defeated a Top-15 nationally ranked team for the first time since 2022 when the Blue Dragons swept No. 12 Seward County.
The last time the Blue Dragons won a match where all sets were deuce sets (sets won by two points), was November 5, 2017 against Seward County (25-23, 26-24, 30-28) in the 2017 Region 6 Tournament championship match in Liberal.
For the match, there were 26 ties and six lead changes. The Blue Dragons out-hit Indian Hills .164-.073.
Freshman Giovanna Montero had her fifth double-double of the season to lead the Blue Dragons. Monteiro had 16 kills with .167 hitting on 48 attacks. She added a season-high 22 digs and had two ace serves and one block assist.
Freshman Julia Macedo hit .242 with 13 kills on 33 attacks. She had three block assists and four digs.
Freshman middle Maria Eduarda Dias had her best match of the season with seven kills, hitting .538 on 13 attacks with two block assists, all coming in the final two sets. Sophomore middle Mattie Galliher had six kills and a team-high four block assists.
Defensive specialist Clara Oliveira had 17 digs, while libero Arianna Delgado had 14 digs and an ace serve. Richa finished with 23 assists. Klaudia Bilinksa had 12 assists.
Alisha Perez had 11 kills to lead Indian Hills (5-5).
Set 1: The Blue Dragons jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set, but the Blue Dragons couldn’t overcome eight attack errors and two service aces in the set. IHCC led 11-10, but a Galliher kill tied the set at 11-all. The Blue Dragons trailed 20-16, but a 4-0 run, aided by a Delgado ace serve tied set at 20-20. Tied at 21-all after a Macedo kill, Indian Hills scored two in a row to take the lead in the set for good. There were seven ties and two lead changes in the first set.
Set 2: Tied at 4-4, a kill and ace from Monteiro and a kill from Ty’Lia Davis capped a 5-0 run for a 9-4 lead. The Dragons were tied three other times in the set, but sided out at a 67.7 percent clip (24 of 32) in the set and never relinquished the lead. A Lauren Vasquez kill opened a 13-7 lead, but the Warriors ultimately tied the set at 18-18. Blue Dragon head coach Dayana Acevedo Trent was 3 for 3 in official challenges in the second set. A key challenge on a touch-no-touch won by the Dragons gave Hutchinson a 21-19 lead. IHCC tied the set at 21, 23 and 24 all. A Macedo kill gave the Dragons a 25-24 lead and another Acevedo Trent challenge victory on set point helped the Dragons win 26-24 and tie the match. Monteiro and Macedo combined for nine kills in the second set.
Set 3: The Blue Dragons got off to a slow start in the third set, trailing 3-0, 8-3 and 11-6. Trailing 14-10, Dias started and ended a 4-0 run to tie the set at 14 with kills. Leading 22-21, a Galliher-Monteiro double block gave Hutchinson a 23-21 lead. Then leading 24-23, Macedo and Dias capped the set with a double block to win 25-23 and give the Dragons a 2-1 match lead. Dias had three kills and two block assists in the third set. The Dragons overcame six service errors in the third set.
Set 4: In order to close out the match in four sets, the Blue Dragons fought off a pair of Indian Hills set points. Before that, the Dragons scored the first five points of the set. Indian Hills kept coming back, tying the set at 10-10, 17-17, 19-19 and 22-22. After winning a long rally when Richa won a joust at the net for a 23-22 lead, IHCC got back-to-back kills to lead 24-23. The Dragons fought off the first set point with a Monteiro kill, then down 25-24, Hutchinson kept the set alive with a Dias kill to knot the set for the eighth time. Dias hit an off-speed shot for a kill for a 26-25 lead, then Richa delivered Hutchinson’s fourth service ace of the match on match point to complete the victory.
