Elyria Christian High School played the first football game in the 44-year history of the school Friday night.
The Eagles dropped a 54-7 decision at Peabody-Burns in a Six-Man contest.
“Tonight, Elyria Christian made history with our very first football game!,” said the school’s Facebook page. “And while the scoreboard didn’t go our way, with a final score of 54-7, there is so much to be proud of.
“These boys battled, competed and never stopped fighting against one of the top 6-man teams in the state. Every snap, every tackle, every yard, and every moment on that field is part of the foundation we’re building.
“The first game is officially in the books — and there’s nowhere to go but forward and up! We’ll learn, grow, get better and keep building this program one game at a time. And can we talk about that Eagle crowd?!
“The support in the stands made this first night something our players will never forget. Thank you to everyone who showed up and cheered them on.”
The Eagles will play next Friday at Chetopa and then will have a rematch against Peabody-Burns at home on Sept. 17.
Chetopa defeated Altoona-Midway 58-12 Thursday night at home.
