Pitchers Aubree Thomas and Jessica Schmidt combined on a seven-hit shutout to lead the Hutchinson Community College softball team to a 3-0 victory over the Barton Cougars in Game 1 of a KJCCC doubleheader on Saturday at Fun Valley.

Game 2 got one out into the bottom of the third inning when it went into a weather delay with Barton leading 3-0. The game was eventually suspended and will be resumed at 2 p.m. on Monday at Fun Valley.

Thomas (10-1) earned her 10th win of the season and 23rd of her Blue Dragon career on Saturday. She earned her second win of the season against Barton. Thomas went 5 2-3 innings, scattering seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Only one Cougar batter reached third base against Thomas.

Schmidt entered the game with runners at first and second with two out in the top of the sixth. Schmidt earned her sixth save of the season, retiring all four batters she faced with one strikeout.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Barton 8-7. The Dragons left nine runners on base.

Sophomore Gabby Stauffer was 2 for 3 with two singles and an RBI. Redshirt freshman Reese Goetz was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and a run scored.

The only runs scored in the game came in the bottom of the third inning.

After Goetz and Addi Lutz reached base on a hit and hit by pitch, respectively, Riley Dreher doubled to left field to score Goetz for a 1-0 Hutchinson lead. The double was Dreher’s 22nd double of the season, which tied Olivia Sandoval for the Blue Dragon single-season record for doubles.

Two batters after Dreher’s RBI double, Stauffer and Leyla O’Connor both had RBI infield singles to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead.

Hutchinson had opportunities to score in the fourth and fifth innings, but left the bases loaded in both innings.
