Dragons Second After 2 Rounds at Plains District Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Three players reside in the individual Top 5 to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to second place after two rounds of the NJCAA Plains District Tournament at Rivercut Golf Course.

The Blue Dragons shot a 4-over 580 over the first 36 holes on Monday and trails first-place Indian Hills by 17 strokes, but lead third-place John A. Logan College by 16 strokes entering Tuesday’s final round. The top three teams in the nine-team field earn automatic qualifying spots for the 2026 NJCAA Division I Men’s National Tournament in two weeks at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Led by sophomore Corey Scullion‘s 69 on Monday morning, the Blue Dragons shot a 4-over 292 in the opening round. The Dragons also counted Region 6 individual champion Hugo Duquaine‘s 71, KJCCC individual champion Jack Northgraves‘ 72 and Grant Hatzenbuehler‘s 80.

Hatzenbuehler and Joe Austin rebounded from tough opening rounds to lead the Dragons in Round 2. Hatzenbuehler shot a 71 while Austin and Duquaine had 72s and Northgraves finished with a 73 for an even-par round of 288.

Dodge City is fourth in the team standings at 606 and Garden City is fifth at 608.

The final round tees off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Duquaine was the low Blue Dragon individual on Monday at 1-under 141 after rounds of 71 and 72. Duquaine trails tournament leader Charlie Preston of Indian Hills, who had rounds of 68 and 66 on Monday and leads the tournament at 10-under 134.

Scullion and Northgraves are tied for fifth at 145. Scullion had rounds of 69 and 75 on Monday, while Northgraves had rounds of 72 and 73.

Hatzenbuehler is tied for 21st at 151 after rounds of 80 and 71. Austin is tied for 23rd at 152 after rounds of 80 and 72.

Individual player Matt Vearncombe is tied for 16th at 6-over 150. He posted back-to-back rounds of 75 on Monday.
