Dragon’s Lead KJCCC Championship After 36 Holes

NEWTON – The only team to shoot a pair of sub-300 rounds in windy conditions on Sunday at Sand Creek Station, the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team has a decisive lead after two rounds of the KJCCC Championship.

The Blue Dragons shot rounds of 6-under 282 and 8-over 296 to lead the team championship chase by 21 strokes with a 36-hole score of 578. Garden City is second at 599 (301-298). Dodge City is third at 608 (306-302).

The final round of the 54-hole tournament is Monday morning with tee times beginning off Hole No. 1 at 8:50 a.m. Blue Dragon individual players teeing off from 9:20 to 10 a.m. and Hutchinson players who count toward the team score from 10:10 to 10:40 a.m.

The Blue Dragons built a 19-stroke lead after 18 holes in less windy conditions than the afternoon round. Hutchinson counted scores of 68 from Hugo Duquaine, 70 from Corey Scullion and a pair of even-par 72s from Jack Northgraves and Ronnie Gibb.

After the winds picked up in the afternoon round, the Blue Dragons still shot the low team score of the round with a 296. The Dragons counted scores from Scullion (70), Northgraves (72), Grant Hatzenbuehler (74) and Duquaine (80).

Six of the 10 Blue Dragon players in the field reside in the Top 10 after Sunday’s rounds.

Scullion leads the individual title chase at 4-under 140. He leads Garden City’s Ilan Dufrenoy by three strokes.

Scullion had four birdies and one double bogey in his opening round of 70. The Blue Dragon sophomore got off to a slow start in the second round, playing the first seven holes at 3-over par. Scullion turned his round around with five birdies over the last 11 holes to finish with a second-straight round of 70.

Jack Northgraves and Blue Dragon individual player Joe Austin are tied for third at even-par 144.

Northgraves carded back-to-back 72s on Sunday, getting three birdies and three bogeys in the first round and two birdies and two bogeys in the second round.

Austin posted rounds of 74 and 70 on Sunday. He had five birdies and three bogeys in his second round to finish in the Top 5 on Sunday.

Duquaine and Hatzenbuehler are tied for fifth at 4-over 148.

Duquaine had six birdies and only one bogey in the opening round. He struggled in the second round, but closed strong. Duquaine finished his round with four-straight birdies.

Freshman individual player Hudson Sauder is tied for ninth after 36 holes at 152. Sauder had rounds of 75 and 77.

Freshman individual player Matt Vearncombe is tied for 11th at 153 with rounds of 76 and 77.

Gibb and Cal Schultz are tied for 16th at 155. Gibb had rounds of 72 and 83, while Schultz posted rounds of 80 and 75.

Freshman Lincoln Barnes is tied for 21st at 156, posting rounds of 76 and 80 on Sunday.
