LIBERAL – Sophomore Isabella Van Fleet extended her goal-scoring streak and the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team extended its winning streak on Wednesday night.
Van Fleet scored a pair of goals to lead the Blue Dragons to a 3-1 KJCCC road victory over Seward County at Liberal High School.
The Blue Dragons won their fifth game in a row to improve to 7-5-1 overall and 6-2-1 (19 points) in the KJCCC. Hutchinson travels to play at No. 1 Butler at 6 p.m. on Saturday at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado.
Van Fleet scored in the seventh minute to extend her personal consecutive game goal scoring streak to six games. That ties Jen Rogers (2014) for the eighth-longest streak in Blue Dragon history.
Van Fleet scored two goals against the Saints, giving her nine goals and four assists (22 points) in the last six games.
With her four-point game on Wednesday against the Saints, Van Fleet surpassed her freshman point total of 18 points. Van Fleet has 22 points this season. Van Fleet how has five career multi-goal games.
Freshman Motunrayo Ojobare had two assists on Wednesday, her first career multi-goal game. She has had a goal or assist in five-straight games.
Sophomore Olivia Tamaki and a goal and an assist and has four assists in her last two games. She was also credited with the game-winning goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani had a season-high nine saves for the Blue Dragons.
The Blue Dragons were outshot 19-12 in the game, including 10-6 in shots on goal. The Saints also produced eight corner kicks.
The Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead just 6:54 into the game. Tamaki placed a long pass that Van Fleet chased down. She traveled another 15 yards before lacing a shot to the upper-right corner for her eighth goal of the season.
The Saints tied the game at 1-1 when Julia Astrath scored from 15 yards out with 21:36 to play in the first half. That was also the halftime score.
The Dragons took a 2-1 lead with 33:10 remaining. Ojobare had the ball with her back to the goal and spun away from a Seward defender. With a little space to the right of the goal, Ojobare drew another defender in and slid a pass to Tamaki, who one-timed a shot that bounced off the cross bar and in for a 2-1 lead.
The Blue Dragons made it 3-1 when Ojobare again made a spin move to create space with a defender. This time as she spun, Ojobare slipped but quickly got back to her feet and passed the Van Fleet, who chipped the ball into the goal.
