Drew Bugner had three of the Hutchinson Monarchs’ eight hits Friday, and the Monarchs held on to beat the Derby Twins 5-4 in Derby.
Bugner was at the heart of the Monarchs’ two scoring innings. Down 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Bugner led off with a single. After back-to-back walks, Jaden Gustafson singled home Bugner and Jackson Schanuel as part of a three-run inning.
The next inning, JJ Spafford led off and was hit by a pitch. Bugner followed with a single, and RBIs from Jackson Schanuel and James Dagenhart gave the Monarchs a 5-1 lead.
Gabe Winans was the winning pitcher, as he gave up a run on three hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
Kale Day earned the save, stranding the tying run on second base.
The Monarchs improved to 16-7 and will take a few days off before playing again at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the Wichita Black Sox.
