Blue Dragons Roll in KJCCC-Opening Victory over Garden City

The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team won its fifth-straight Jayhawk Conference opener on Saturday night, rolling up some big-time numbers against Garden City.

The Blue Dragons continued their early-season offensive onslaught with a 70-0 victory over Garden City at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons travel to play at No. 12 Butler at 6 p.m. on Saturday in El Dorado. Garden City is now 1-3 (1-2 KJCCC).

Some of the notable Blue Dragon numbers on Saturday were:

+ This is the second time this season the Dragons have scored 70 points in a game and the 22nd time in program history;

+ The 70 points scored are the most against Garden City in series history;

+ The 70-point margin of victory is the largest in series history against the Broncbusters and tied for the 10th-largest in program history;

+ The Blue Dragons rushed for 415 yards, which ties for the ninth-most rushing yards in Blue Dragon single-game history;

+ The Dragons had eight rushing touchdowns, which ties for the third-most rushing touchdowns in single-game history. Hutchinson had eight rushing touchdowns in games against Highland in 2011 and Ellsworth in 2023.

The 205 points scored in the first three games this season are the third-most in a three-game stretch in program history. The Dragons had a three-game stretch in 2019 with 214 points. They had 212 points in three-straight games in 2011.

Running back J.B. Price rushed for 192 yards and three rushing touchdowns on runs of 33, 3 and 13 yards. Price is the first Blue Dragon back with at least three rushing touchdowns in a game since Waymond Jordan Jr. against Georgia Military in 2024.

Jayden Hall rushed for 95 yards on nine carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns of 49 and 6 yards. Hall scored a third touchdown on a 29-yard reception where he slid past four tackles to find the end zone.

Ravelle Leak had 59 yards on six carries and two touchdowns. Terrell King rushed for 53 yards and his first career touchdown of 38 yards.

Quarterback Randy Phillips completed 8 of 13 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Receiver Karlan Ransom had two receptions for 48 yards and a jaw-dropping 41-yard touchdown from Phillips where he ripped a potential interception away from a Garden City defender, kept his balance and sprinted into the end zone. Nakai Poole had two catches for 22 yards.

The Blue Dragons out-gained Garden City 583-101. The Dragons had 168 passing yards. Garden City was held to 49 rushing yards and 42 passing yards. The Dragons had 26 first downs to Garden City’s 8

Hutchinson had five quarterback sacks and 18 total tackles for loss. Dylan Gill and Jawan Springs had eight total tackles each to lead the Dragons. Jack Sells had six tackles. Timothy Abraham and Tre Darden had interceptions, while Jason Wilson had a fumble recovery for the three Blue Dragon takeaways.

The Blue Dragons scored on their first two possessions of the game.

Darden’s interception set the Blue Dragons up at the Garden City 33. Price instantly broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown on Hutchinson’s first snap for a 7-0 lead with 14:11 to go in the opening quarter. The Dragons then marched 62 yards in six plays. Hall’s 29-yard swing pass from Phillips capped the drive for a 14-0 lead with 9:16 to play in the first quarter.

Wilson’s fumble recovery in the second quarter came at the Buster 35. Price had a 27-yard run on first down and finished off the scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 10:12 to play in the second quarter. The Dragon defense forced a punt after a 3-and-out and Leak’s 42-yard touchdown run capped off an 84-yard, six-play drive for a 28-0 lead.

The Dragons scored 21 points in the first 5 minutes, 40 seconds of the third quarter to lead 49-0. Price had a 13-yard touchdown run, then came Ransom’s incredible catch for a 41-yard touchdown. Hall then broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run with 9:20 remaining to build a 49-point lead.

Hutchinson had three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Hall had a 6-yard scoring run, followed by King’s 38-yard romp and then Leak finished off the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown.

GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons won their eighth-straight game over Garden City to match a series-best win streak. … The Dragons are now 46-40 all-time against the Busters. … The 415 rushing yards tied a 415-yard game against Fort Scott in 2021 for the ninth-most rushing yards in single-game history. … This was the second time this season that Blue Dragon kicker Parker Grizzell has had 10 point-after-touchdown kicks in a single game. … This was the first time the Blue Dragons had games of 70 or more points in consecutive games since 2019 (85 vs. Dodge City, 89 vs. Rezolution Prep). … This is the 12th-straight game where the Blue Dragons have not allowed a point in the first quarter. That streak goes back to a first-quarter touchdown by Iowa Central last season on September 20, 2025.
