Blue Dragons Open Season with Pair of Reiver Classic Sweeps

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team achieved a feat not done by the Blue Dragons since 2015 on Opening Day 2026 at Reiver Arena.

The Blue Dragons opened the season Friday with 3-0 sweeps against Central Wyoming and Eastern Wyoming on Day 1 of the Reiver Classic at Iowa Western Community College. Hutchinson opened the season early Friday morning with a 25-15, 25-10, 25-17 victory over Central Wyoming in Match 1. The Blue Dragons followed that with an impressive 25-14, 25-13, 25-12 victory over Eastern Wyoming in Match 2.

Those wins marked the first time since 2015 that the Blue Dragons opened the season at a tournament with a pair of victories. The last time came on August 21, 2015 at the NMMI Tournament in Roswell, New Mexico with a pair of sweeps of Eastern Arizona and Odessa.

The Blue Dragons have a tough pair of matches to close out the Reiver Classic on Saturday. Hutchinson takes on No. 3 Northeastern Junior College at 8:30 a.m. in a match that won’t be streamed by the Reiver Sports Network. The Dragons then close out the season-opening trip with a matchup against host Iowa Western at 1:30 p.m.

MATCH 1 VS. CENTRAL WYOMING
Tied at 10-10 in the first set on Friday morning, the Blue Dragons went on a 15-5 run to claim the first set and dominated Central Wyoming from that juncture.

The Blue Dragons hit .176 overall on 29 kills and 79 attacks and added 10 service aces to roll to the season-opening sweep.

Freshman Julia Macedo led the Dragons with .368 hitting and a match-high 10 kills.

Freshman Giovanna Monteiro just missed a double-double with eight kills,10 digs and a match-high four ace serves. Monteiro hit .143 for the match.

Sophomore Lauren Vazquez had five kills on .300 hitting with two blocks and four digs. Freshman Maria Dias hit .667 with four kills on six attacks and two block assists.

Sophomore libero Clara Oliveira had 11 digs and two aces. Freshman Arianna Delgado had seven digs and an ace.

Freshman setter Luisa Richa had 18 assists with two aces and two digs. Freshman Klaudia Bilinksa had eight assists.

MATCH 2 VS. EASTERN WYOMING
The Blue Dragon offense was on a roll against Eastern Wyoming, hitting .448 for the match (40 kills, 10 errors, 67 attacks). Four Blue Dragons hit .400 or better in the match.

Vazquez hit a career-high .583 with eight kills and one error on 12 swings. She added three digs.

Freshman Julia Macedo hit .545 with six kills on 11 attacks and no errors.

Monteiro had a match-high 13 kills and hit .474 on 19 attacks. She added six digs, two aces and two blocks.

Sophomore Mattie Galliher hit .479 with three kills.

The Blue Dragons added nine aces and 5.5 team blocks in the match against the Lancers.

Oliveira tallied 14 digs to lead the dragon back row.

Richa had 19 assists, three digs and two aces. Bilinksa had 16 assists with four digs and two aces
