The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team pushed the No. 5-ranked Iowa Western Reivers to the limit on Friday night at the Sports Arena, but the Blue Dragons came up a goal short.
Tied at halftime, Iowa Western scored the only goal of the second half in the 61st minute to defeat the Blue Dragons 2-1.
The Blue Dragons fell to 1-3 overall, while the Reivers moved to 5-0. This was the first time the Blue Dragons and Reivers met on the soccer field. The Blue Dragons open KJCCC play at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Barton in Great Bend.
Freshman Annabel Goodman scored her first goal of the season, which tied the game in the 21st minute. Isabell Van Fleet made a strong run down the right sideline and delivered a perfect cross to Goodman, who drove to within 10 feet and snapped a shot into the lower corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.
Iowa Western dominated possession in the second half until about the 5-minute mark remaining when the Dragons made a late push. Hutchinson had only one shot on goal in the second half.
For the game, the Blue Dragons were out-shot 26-12 overall, including 11-4 in shots on goal.
Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper Hanna Helshani had a season-high nine saves.
Iowa Western took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Camila Cortes scored from and Autumn Christiansen goal.
The Reivers took a 2-1 lead, converting a corner kick on Morgan Crees finished off the set piece to give Iowa Western the league. Miko Matsuyama delivered the corner kick attempt.
