Blue Dragons Drop Pair to Close Out Reiver Classic

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Freshman Giovanna Monteiro had a combined 36 kills to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team in the final two matches of the Reiver Classic.

But No. 3 Northeastern Junior College and classic host Iowa Western earned a pair of victories on Saturday at Reiver Arena.

The third-ranked Plainswomen held Hutchinson to an .096 attack percentage in a 25-19, 25-22, 25-15 win over the Blue Dragons. The Blue Dragons had a match point in hand in the fifth set against Iowa Western, but the Reivers scored the final three points in a 25-22, 18-25, 24-26, 25-21, 17-15 victory.

Hutchinson (2-2) will play Eastern Wyoming and Trinidad State on Thursday in a pair of neutral-court matches at Dodge City.

IOWA WESTERN RECAP
The Blue Dragons were in position to earn a win over the Reivers in the final match of the tournament on Saturday.

Tied at one set each, the Blue Dragons led Iowa Western 24-20 in the third set, but the Reivers rallied for six-straight points to take the set 26-24.

Then in the fifth set, the Dragons had to fight off three match points against and used a 4-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. Iowa Western again rallied with the final three points to close out the win over the Blue Dragons.

Monteiro had a match-high 23 kills, hitting .226 on 62 attacks to lead the Blue Dragons. Monteiro added seven digs, two block assists and two service aces.

Julia Macedo finished with nine kills on 33 swings with five digs and two blocks.

Mattie Galliher hit .273 with eight kills on 23 attacks with three blocks. Kelsi Maier finished with eight kills. Maria Dias had seven kills on 12 attacks.

Setter Luisa Richa had 38 assists, setter Klaudia Bilinksa had 15 assists and five digs with four ace serves.

Libero Clara Oliveira finished with 18 digs. Arianna Delgado had 14 digs.

The Blue Dragons had six total blocks and eight ace serves, but had 11 service errors.

NJC RECAP
The third-ranked Plainsmen used its overall firepower to get past a good effort by the Blue Dragons.

Monteiro had a team-high 12 kills on .241 hitting. She had four digs.

Macedo had six kills, but hit .000 on 23 attacks. Galliher had five kills on nine attacks with one block. Maier had four kills.

Richa closed with 19 assists and three digs. Oliveira had 11 digs.

The Blue Dragons had 31 kills, but 22 attack errors against NJC.
