Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Chase High School sophomore Malik Carson as this week’s Athlete of the Week presented by Hutchinson Community College.

The week — Carson had a historical weekend at the Class 1A state track and field meet at Wichita State. When Carson won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 1 3/4 inches, he became the school’s first state champion since 2009 and just the school’s second boys state champion since 1959. Carson didn’t stop there, finishing third in the 200 meters (22.57 seconds) and fourth in the 100 (11.16).

The season — Carson is one of the area’s rising standout athletes. The sophomore had a great spring, setting Chase’s school record in the 100 (10.8) and 200 (22.37). His season-best in the long jump is 22-5 1/2, which is less than four inches from the school record. Carson also had a good basketball season, averaging nearly 14 points and 8 rebounds a game.

Each week, Ad Astra Radio recognizes an outstanding athlete from the area teams we cover.
