Each month, Ad Astra Radio recognizes a girls and boys Team of the Month, selected from area high schools. The Girls Team of the Month for April goes to the Haven Softball team.
The month: In early April, the Wildcats split with Pratt, giving them their only loss. They swept both Halstead and Hoisington in doubleheaders and won 2 hard-fought games at Kingman — had a 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the 6th and gave up the lead, trailed 12-10 in the 7th with 1 out and rallied for 4 runs, including 3 on a Paige O’Neal bases loaded triple. The team finished the month by giving Inman their only loss of the season. Pitching has carried the team this year, with Avery Brawner, Paige O’Neal and Ella Bontrager combining to allow 112 hits over 124 innings, while striking out 165 batters and posting a collective 2.59 ERA and a .224 batting average against. At the plate, Brawner and Bontrager lead the way, and seniors Mayzie Warden and Morgan O’Neal aren’t far behind. The team is looking at a chance to return to state for the first time since 2023, when the current seniors were freshmen.
Haven plays Hesston this Friday, to give them a chance to win a share of the league title (shared with Pratt) if they sweep. According to Coach Darin Ashworth, Elyse Griffin a good pitcher and will be a very good challenge. The Wildcats will bring TMP to town on May 12th for a matchup of teams with 20+ wins and 1 loss.
Stay tuned! The Boys Team of the Month will be announced on Thursday.
