TOPEKA, Kan. — Zion Burgess, Hutchinson High School senior, won the 2024 Kansas Youth of the Year competition yesterday in Topeka.

Burgess participated in interviews, panel discussions and gave a speech about his journey being a “Club kid” in Hutchinson.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Marketing & Event Coordinator Elicia Lance shared that the organization is thrilled for Burgess.

We have watched Zion grow from a shy kid to a leader both in and out of the Club,” Lance said. “Not only is he an honor student on the football and track teams at Hutchinson High School and involved in numerous leadership groups, but he is also active around the Club.”

According to Lance, Burgess loves helping kids with homework during Power Hour, where he says, “Watching kids find joy in succeeding makes me feel proud of my role.”

“Zion will be a great representative for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Kansas,” Lance said.

Burgess has been a Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson member for six years. In December, the organization announced Burgess as the Hutchinson 2024 Youth of the Year out of their three candidates: Burgess, Taysha Rideaux, and Camrynn Harris.
