HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson City Council Tuesday awarded the 2023 arterial street maintenance project contract to APAC Kansas. APAC’s bid, the lower of the two received, came in at just over $934 thousand dollars, more than $100 thousand above the engineers’ estimate.
The project involves placing an ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface over the existing roadway along 30th Avenue from Main East to Waldron. The mill and overlay of that surface were last completed in 2014.
Workers will put down a thin layer of oil and then 5/8 inch of asphalt with an extremely hard aggregate. The result is intended to be long-lasting, flexible, and a smoother surface to drive on.
Projects done under the ASM program are selected based on a pavement condition index study conducted by the City of Hutchinson.
