McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Fire Department responded to the 1000 block of South Ash for a structure fire at 11:25 a.m. Thursday morning. The two occupants and dog were able to evacuate safely from the residence.
According to Fire Chief Chad Mayberry of the McPherson Fire Department, two engines and three command vehicles, with a total of nine personnel, responded to the initial call, which was a report of a fire on the back porch of the residence. McPherson Police Department and McPherson EMS responded to the initial alarm and assisted at the scene as well. Kansas Gas Service and BPU responded to shut off the utilities to the residence.
Upon arriving, the first crews found the back porch heavily involved in fire and extending into the residence. Two occupants who were at the residence evacuated safely along with one dog.
Another fire department apparatus with three personnel responded for assistance later.
Due to the smoke and heat damage from the fire extending into the rear area of the residence, the fire department considers the residence likely a “total loss”.
It was determined that the fire was accidental upon further investigation, with the heat source identified as a barbecue grill used on the covered deck attached to the back of the house.
