Two Marion residents were injured Friday afternoon after they were struck by a tire that had come off a trailer in far northwest Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Wayne and Barbara Akers were riding bikes westbound on US 36 near McDonald, about 19 miles west of Atwood when they were struck.

The tire had come off an eastbound trailer being pulled by a pickup truck driven by Phillip Cole of Granby, Montana.

Both bicyclists were taken to Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood with reported serious injuries. Cole was not injured.
