RENO COUNTY, Kan. — An abandoned home was destroyed in a late Tuesday afternoon fire west of Cheney Lake. Reno County Fire Districts 8 and 9 and Pretty Prairie Fire were called out at 4:30 p.m. to the 26,000 block of South Sand Creek Road, where on arrival they found smoke coming from the roof and grass fires on the east and west sides of the residence along with two small sheds fully involved in fire. The fire in the attic was difficult to access and after a partial roof collapse crews went to a defensive attack.
Additional manpower was brought in from Cheney, and due to the extreme heat and humidity crews were frequently rotated out for rehab with assistance from Pretty Prairie EMS.
It took two hours to get the fire under control, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.
