Thousands Without Power Across Kansas, Multiple Reports of Wind Gusts Exceeding 60 MPH

2:37 p.m. – Evergy is reporting just over 5,000 customers without power. About 60 customers are off in Reno County, mostly on the south side of Hutchinson, the city of South Hutchinson, and south of south Hutchinson. Midwest Energy is reporting 283 customers without power in the southwest part of Lyons, with another 200 or so out in the Great Bend area.

There have been multiple reports of wind gusts exceeding 60 miles an hour this afternoon. With some gusts reported over 70 in the Salina and Russell areas. The peak gust reported so far at Hutchinson Regional Airport was 64 miles an hour, just after 1 PM.

3:00 p.m. –  Evergy Outages in Hutch area up to around 100.

6:20 p.m. – Marion County fire crews were called out just after 4 PM Thursday to a grass fire in the ditch at US 56 and Goldenrod Road a mile east of the K-15 east junction near Hillsboro. Marion County Emergency Management reported the fire was brought under control just over a half hour later.

In Salina winds brought down a large street lamp post on South 9th, and also knocked over the Mayor’s Christmas Tree in downtown Salina. A 71 mile an hour wind gust was reported at Salina Regional Airport.during the noon hour. A semi was reported blown over on K-156 two miles east of Claflin.
A 65 mile an hour wind gust was reported from a personal weather station inPretty Prairie, while Hutchinson Regional Airport had a top gust of 64miles an hour.  Gusts to 60 miles an hour were reported near Partridge and at the Ellsworth Airport. The highest wind speed recorded during the day Thursday in Central Kansas was 77 miles an hour at the Russell Airport.
