By the Hutchinson Fire Department
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (April 22, 2024) — At approximately 1657 hours (4:57 p.m.) the Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 5400 block of East 4th. While enroute, crews were able to see visible smoke shortly after leaving their stations. Wind conditions were sustained 28 mph and gusting 43 mph from the South. First arriving crew found a single-story residential structure that was fully involved experiencing wind driven fire conditions. The wind had spread the fire North of the residence igniting two large brush piles, a vehicle, and produced two small brush fires. HFD started rural water operations and upgraded the alarm. Outside departments were requested for water supply. Crews were able to extinguish the fire 1.5 hours after the time of call. While crews were working the first structure fire, another call was received in the 200 block of West Avenue F for a second structure fire. Mutual aid was requested and apparatus from the initial fire responded. Luckily the second fire was small in nature and handled quickly.
Crews will remain on scene in the 5400 block of east 4th for a few hours putting out the remaining hot spots. Please avoid the area to allow us to work.
The 3 adults and 1 child who occupy the home were not at home at the time of the fire. Due to the extent of fire and amount of damage to the home, HFD is still trying to locate multiple pets that may have been in the home. No injuries were reported, and the fire will remain under investigation for some time.
HFD would like to thank all departments that assisted us today.
