STERLING, Kan. — The Sterling College Education Department has been approved as a participant in the Kansas Registered Teacher Apprentice Model, beginning in the 2024-25 academic year. The program is a “four-year competency-based teacher registered apprenticeship that offers a comprehensive approach to teacher training, combining on-the-job learning, related technical instruction, mentorship, and a structured wage scale.”

“We at Sterling College are very excited about being able to participate in the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program. Our education program is stellar, and it develops teachers who are qualified to provide a solid education that will turn our future generations into the leaders that will impact the world in a positive manner,” said Mitzi Suhler, vice president for enrollment services.

The Kansas State Department of Education explains that the “Kansas Registered Teacher Apprentice (RTA) Model is a four-year competency-based teacher registered apprenticeship that offers a comprehensive approach to teacher training, combining on-the-job learning, related technical instruction, mentorship, and a structured wage scale. This model is designed to provide aspiring teachers, without a bachelor’s degree, the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the classroom and provide districts the opportunity to promote from within, and play a significant role in training their future teachers.”

“Sterling has quite a reputation for producing quality teachers. We are excited at the opportunity to partner with local school districts using the Registered Teacher Apprenticeship program,” said Rachel Wannamaker, assistant professor of education.
