HUTCHISON, Kan. (Jan. 23, 2026) – The Salvation Army of Reno County is doing more than wishing people to be warm. Their warming center at 700 N Walnut will open beginning today when it opens at 8am. Their weekly warming center hours will be Monday thru Friday from 8am to 4pm, Saturdays from 8am to 4pm, and Sundays 8am to 1pm until the winter cold advisory is over.

Major James said, “Scripture directs us to do more than wishing someone to be warm and well fed, it asks us to do something about it when we are able to do so.” The Salvation Army each year opens its doors as a warming center when there is a winter cold advisory. It is always encouraged for people to shelter in place when the weather is hazardous or dangerously cold, however, there are times when people find themselves seeking shelter. For some, when their pipes freeze, they still need to shower for work or their children need a place to clean up for school.

“We have had families come to us each of the past couple of years because their pipes have frozen and one family had a water line break. People, they still needed a place to shower and get cleaned up until their situation gets resolved. On one occasion we worked with a family to come in while our building was closed”, said Major James. The Salvation Army also helps those who are traveling for appointments during the day and need a warm place to duck in to get out of the cold and receive a warm drink of coffee or hot chocolate.

With all of this going on, The Salvation Army still has $61,697 left to go of their overall $300,000 seasonal goal to go. With just over 1 week left, The Salvation Army needs our help to make it possible to give the vital services our community members need. Our community has the opportunity to do more than wish our community members to be well, we can actually do something about it.
