SALINA, Kan. — Homelessness is rising nationally, with an 18% increase over the past year due to escalating housing costs and inflation according to the Salina Rescue Mission. This trend is evident in Salina, where the Salina Rescue Mission witnesses its effects daily.
In 2024, the Mission served 66,800 meals, operating every day of the year. As the only program of its kind in the region, it provides meals not only to shelter guests but to anyone in the community needing a hot, nutritious meal.
The Mission also provided shelter for an average of 75 men per night last year, a number that has now grown to between 80 and 85.
“Behind each number is a person with a story—a story of struggle, of survival, and of hope,” shared Pastor Chad Young with Salina Rescue Mission.
Homelessness can be a result of many things from mental health, substance abuse, trauma, domestic violence, lack of life skills, poverty, and unaffordable housing.
“While meals and beds meet immediate survival needs, we know that real, lasting change takes time, effort, and God’s grace,” Pastor Young stated.
To help men move forward, the Salina Rescue Mission has established three core programs:
- Supportive Health Program: This initiative assists men with disabilities in stabilizing their health. Last year, the program facilitated 135 doctor visits and filled 297 prescriptions, laying the groundwork for recovery.
- Employment Program: By providing training in resume writing, interview skills, budgeting, and financial responsibility, this program helps men gain and retain employment. Many have achieved financial independence through these efforts.
- New Life Program: Aimed at men dealing with addiction, anger, and trauma, this Christ-centered, long-term program offers hope through faith, biblical counseling, and personal responsibility, encouraging men to rebuild their lives.
Each program focuses on understanding the root causes of homelessness and guiding individuals toward a brighter future, with a strong emphasis on personal growth and support.
The Mission also addresses practical needs, offering clothing, laundry facilities, ID assistance, and connections to healthcare and mental health services, including addiction support. Their Street Outreach Ministry extends compassion and resources to those still living on the streets, encouraging them toward help and healing.
The Salina Rescue Mission operates without government funding, relying on community generosity for 70% of its support.
This summer presents a unique fundraising challenge as needs remain high. However, a generous anonymous donor has offered to match every gift given in June, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. This opportunity means donations will have double the impact, providing essential resources and hope to those in need. The Mission invites the community to support their efforts.
“If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, this is your moment. We invite you to come alongside us as we share God’s love and extend hope, healing, and restoration to those in need,” Pastor Young said.
