Reno County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz to Retire Dec. 29

By Lucky Kidd

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz is retiring December 29th. The announcement of her retirement was made during Tuesday’s Reno County Commission meeting.

Kowitz was elected to the position in 2016 and was re-elected to her second term in 2020. Before being elected she worked in the Treasurer’s Office and prior to that she was associated with a local bail bond firm.

With her resignation, Reno County Republican precinct committee members will now nominate a successor who will be formally appointed by Governor Laura Kelly to fill the remainder of Kowitz’s term, which runs through October 2025. County Commissioner and precinct committee member John Whitesel said the committee will meet December 21st.

The position will be on the ballot next year, but county treasurers in Kansas don’t take office until the following October per state law.
