RENO COUNTY, Kan. – A grass fire has broken out in Reno County. The fire is expected to move rapidly, and some evacuations have begun. We will continue to update this post as information becomes available.
Reno County Sheriff’s Office – 1:16 p.m. – Sheriff’s Deputies are currently assisting in traffic control and evacuation of the area north of 56th Street from Monroe to Lorraine. There is currently no mandatory evacuation order, but the area is blocked off to try and avoid any potential dangers. Please stay clear of the area to allow Deputies and Fire Personnel to safely control the situation.
Plum Creek Elementary School – 1:45 p.m. – Due to the fires north of 43rd Street, Plum Creek Elementary is starting evacuation procedures to Crosspoint Church, .1410 E. 30th,, Hutchinson, KS. Parents will need to pick up their student at Crosspoint Church after 2:15 pm. Please do not go to Plum Creek as we are starting evacuation procedures at the building. If you have questions please call the central office at 620-543-2258. Again, Plum Creek Elementary parents please pick up your student after 2:15 at Crosspoint Church.
Kansas State Fair – 2:02 p.m. – Due to the wildfire north of Hutchinson, the Kansas State Fairgrounds is accepting horses for temporary emergency shelter, effective immediately and until further notice. Important information for those arriving with horses: Enter the Fairgrounds through Gate 10, Stop at the Stalling Office located just inside Gate 10 (next to the Big Red Barn) to provide contact information and receive directions, Horses will be separated by travel history, Horses that have traveled within the last 15 days will be placed in Barn 1, Horses that have remained local will be placed in Barns 2 and 3, Kansas State Fair will provide water, Please bring feed, buckets, halters, medications, and any other supplies your horse may need, Trailers may park in the Midway area. Reno County, Kansas- Government – 2:30 p.m. – Plum St Fire & Evacuation – An evacuation order is in place from Plum Street east to Halstead north of 56th street, out of an abundance of caution. The fire is located near 82nd Street, east of Blue Spruce Road, extending toward Rolling Hills and the 1000 block of East 69th Street. A smaller portion of the fire is also present near Plum Street and 69th Street on the east side, extending down to the 6400 block of North Plum. Please avoid the area, as there is heavy emergency traffic. If you are not within the evacuation area, the situation is improving.
Buhler USD 313 – 3:14 p.m. – Buhler Staff and Families, As you travel between Buhler and Hutchinson, please avoid the area north of 43rd street to 95th street between Monroe and Halstead. We are very thankful for our firefighters as they keep our community safe and our property protected.
