HUTCHINSON, Kan. (June 25, 2025) – At their meeting Wednesday morning, , the Reno County Board of Commissioners tackled a range of important issues, from fostering residential growth to updating on county operations and cautioning residents about storm-related scams.
The Commissioners approved a development agreement with Strawn Development, Inc., aimed at boosting residential housing, particularly entry-level homes. Strawn Homes had requested a $270,000 grant to reduce the per-lot price by approximately $9,000, a discount that will directly benefit home buyers. The county will disburse $9,000 per residential unit upon its sale or lease. Commissioner Bogner cast the sole dissenting vote, expressing concerns about the lack of a project cap and potential impacts on funding for other initiatives. Despite this, the motion passed.
Reno County Automotive Director Ron Brubaker provided an update on his department’s recent changes. Following the retirement of Director Kyle Berg after nearly two decades of service, the department faced a 4.5-month period of being short-staffed. However, it achieved full staffing in late April with the addition of a full-time technician and an apprentice. Since assuming the director role, Brubaker has overseen the purchase of three used vehicles: a 2022 Ford Escape for Appraisers, a 2024 Buick Encore for the Health Department, and a 2023 GMC Acadia for Youth Services. Four vehicles were traded in, and two were transferred to other departments.
In the wake of recent storms that brought high winds and hail to the area, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has urged residents to exercise caution and be vigilant against transient contractor scams, and at this morning’s meeting, Commissioner Ron Hurst issued his own cautionary statement regarding individuals approaching residents about storm-related rebuilding efforts, noting a rise in questionable activities. He emphasized the importance of vigilance for both personal and neighborhood safety, advising residents to watch for unfamiliar vehicles and individuals in affected areas.
