ROZEL, Kan. – A Kansas high school football athlete has passed away following a medical emergency during a team practice on Tuesday in Rozel.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to Pawnee Heights High School at approximately 6:40 PM. According to dispatch reports from Pawnee County, the student-athlete collapsed on the field, and life-saving measures were already underway as first responders arrived at the scene.
Tina Vondracek, Principal of Pawnee Heights USD 496, confirmed the student tragically passed away in a statement to KAKE News Wednesday afternoon.
The tragic loss coincided with the first day of classes for the USD 496 school district.
