A Centre High School student was killed, and another critically injured in a Monday night crash near Marion.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said a car driven by Dwayne Moenning, 17, of Lost Springs was eastbound on 190th Street, or K-256, just after 6:15 PM when he ran a stop sign at the US 77 intersection and struck the trailer of a northbound semi. A passenger in Moenning’s car, Michelle Brasch, 18, of Herington, died at the scene. Moenning was taken to a Wichita hospital where he was reported Tuesday afternoon in critical but stable condition. The semi driver, Ahmed Jeylani of Plano, Texas, was not injured.

USD 397 officials said Tuesday counselors from surrounding schools are helping Centre teachers, social workers and staff in assisting students and each other through this tragic time. The District said their thoughts and prayers go out to both families during this very difficult time.

Donations are being accepted to assist with funeral and medical expenses. Those can be left at Tampa State Bank, Cottonwood Valley Bank in Lincolnville, Barnes Grocery in Herington or the USD 397 office in Lost Springs. There will also be collection jars at the home basketball games next week.
