HUTCHINSON, Kan.  — At 9:14 a.m. on Jan. 24, Hutchinson Fire units were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of east 5th.

Upon arrival crews found a working fire in a 1000 square foot residential home with the elderly occupant trying to self-evacuate from the front door. Crews moved quickly to remove the occupant and transferred them to the care of EMS; the occupant was transported to Hutchinson Hospital for further evaluation. Fire attack crews made an aggressive interior attack while other members searched the home for other occupants, none were found. The fire was listed as under control at 9:37 a.m. and crews worked to overhaul the structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time, but it was noted that the home did not have working smoke detectors in it at the time of the fire.

As a reminder if your home doesn’t have a working smoke detector you can request one from the Hutchinson Fire Department by calling the Community Risk Reduction office at 620-694-2871.

HFD would like to thank the following agencies for assisting in safely bringing this incident under control- Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County Emergency Communications, Reno County EMS, Kansas Gas Service, Evergy and American Red Cross.
