The new Kansas License Plate design, chosen by Kansans, features the Kansas Statehouse dome in the bottom left corner, within a cutout of the state. The background has a yellow, white, and blue gradient and inscribed at the bottom of the design is, “Ad Astra per Aspera,” the phrase, “To the Stars.”
The Kansas Department of Revenue has started replacing all standard embossed license plates in January 2024. The current embossed plates have deteriorated significantly according to the Department of Revenue. After five years, embossed plates are said to lose about 50 percent of their reflectivity, which makes them difficult to read and causes issues for law enforcement.
The new design will be used for all new plate issuances, including replacements for any remaining embossed plates. Any Kansan who currently has the “Ad Astra” standard plate design can transfer their registration to a plate with the new design.
When you renew your registration, you will receive a temporary tag and decal. Do not put the decal on the temporary plate. Within 30 days of processing the renewal, a permanent plate will be delivered to you by mail. Then, you will put the decal on the new license plate.
