GREELEY, Kan. — The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle crash late Sunday afternoon northeast of Greeley that claimed eight lives. One other person was critically injured.
According to the Kansas Informer, the crash occurred at 5:40 p.m. on US 169 just north of Virginia Road in the very southeast corner of Franklin County, where the highway has a long hill with a slight curve to the south. Social media reports and a Kansas City television station report at least one vehicle ended up in flames.
The crash closed US 169 from Garnett to Paola for several hours as the crash was investigated. As of noon Monday, identities of those involved had not been released.
This is the second multi-fatality crash on a Kansas Highway within two months. On March 14, eight people died in a series of multi-vehicle crashes on I-70 east of Goodland during a dust storm.
KTUL in Tulsa is reporting four of the people who died in the wreck near Greeley were from the Tulsa area, and the person who was critically injured was also from around Tulsa.
