McPherson County Commissioners Approve Grant Support

MCPHERSON, Kan. – Monday, McPherson County Commissioners approved a letter of support for a Planning and Demonstration Grant through the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program. The application is a joint project between the county and several cities and townships in McPherson County.

Public Works Director Tom Kramer said the grant could include such projects as the big ditch along Cherokee Road, the realignment of Old Highway 81, and addressing low-rated bridges along major truck corridors. It could, at some point, lead to the parties involved getting as much as $20 million in funding for these and other projects.

The cities of Lindsborg and McPherson are submitting their own letters of support on behalf of the application. McPherson City Commissioners approved their letter of support on Monday as well.

Commissioners also authorized the submission of another grant application, this one by the McPherson County Health Department (MCHD). Director Shalei Shea said the department is in line for as much as $90,000 through the CDC for workforce development activities.

The potential grant amount is figured on a base amount for each county along with population and social vulnerability index ratings. One potential use for the funds is a wage study to see where MCHD stands in relation to other departments.
