McPherson County Adopts Temporary Moratorium on Hydrogen Energy Facilities

McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — McPherson County Commissioners Monday adopted a temporary moratorium on hydrogen energy facilities.

As it did last week for data center projects, the moratorium purpose is to allow the county’s planning board to review and develop regulations for these projects.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Jon Kinsey said there are moves towards development of hydrogen energy facilities in the United States tied to federal funds, and that McPherson and Reno counties are viewed as ideal locations due to underground salt caverns.

These facilities currently are most prevalent in the United Kingdom. This also is a byproduct of oil and gas refining.

Like the data center moratorium, the hydrogen facility moratorium will run through March 1st but could be extended if needed.
