MCPHERSON, Kan. – Ad Astra Radio announces the March 2023 recipient of the McPherson Classroom Hero Award presented by Peoples Bank and Trust.
Cheryl Malm is in her final year of teaching after 32 years total, spending 27 years at McPherson High School in the Math Department. She was also a long-time assistant for the volleyball team, and spent time over her years volunteering at the scores table for other sports.
When reflecting on her time as an educator, she said, “Honestly, I can’t believe it’s been that long, it went by in a flash, but I still love all the kids and will miss them dearly.” She mentioned looking forward to her next step, which if she had the choice, she would still be working with numbers, but she will miss mentoring students. “It’s all about the kids.” she said, talking about the connections and relationships made with her students and added, “When you see them all grown up and doing other things, it’s like a sense of pride, it’s a great feeling.”
MHS Principal Dr. Audrey Herbst said, “When I started here last year, Mrs. Malm was always a go-to for me when I was learning the ropes.” Herbst added, “I knew that she was a strong leader on our staff, and I could go to Mrs. Malm with anything, she’s just a very respected staff member on our team.”
Each month, Ad Astra Radio randomly selects a different educator, from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “Thank You” gift basket. Gift items are courtesy of community partners, including Peoples Bank and Trust, Midway Motors, Stutzman’s Greenhouse.
