LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man who ran down a Nickerson family in July 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky killing one member and critically injuring two others, was sentenced Friday to 70 years in prison.
Michael Hurley was convicted of murder in the death of Trey Jones and assault for injuring his wife Amy, daughter Ava and son Creek. Amy and Ava Jones sustained critical injuries, which for Ava would ultimately put an end to her dreams of playing college basketball.
The jury that convicted Hurley had recommended a 75-year sentence, 35 years Trey Jones’ death and 20 years each for the injuries to Amy and Ava. The sentencing judge reduced that to 70 under a “double rule” that, like a similar rule in Kansas, limits consecutive sentences to double the longest individual sentence, in this case the 35-year sentence for the murder of Trey Jones, who died two days after the accident.
The Jones family had been walking on a sidewalk in downtown Louisville, where Ava was participating in a summer league basketball tournament, when Hurley, who reports indicated had what would be a toxic level of fentanyl in his system, ran them over.
Numerous members of the Jones family were present for Friday’s sentencing.
